Poltergeists are usually meant as disembodied spirits who make noises and move objects (such as rattling hangers, thrown books, or rolling pencils). Poltergeist activity is spontaneous and often concentrated on a specific person. The person is harassed and sometimes harmed.
Poltergeist activity is believed by many people to be uncontrolled telekinetic activity caused by the mental power of whomever it taunts or someone close to them.
In Dungeons and Dragons, poltergeists are invisible spirits. They throw things at people (including heavy objects) but never hurt anyone. These poltergeists sometimes haunt specific homes and occasionally reveal how they became a poltergeist in a phantom shift, a special hallucination that shatters if the hallusinater attacks or is attacked.
