Specter

The word specter came from the word spectrum, meaning an appearance or image.

A specter is a ghostly image (phantasm) or a ghost. Phantasms are usually an image (similar to a hallucination or hologram) of a person that appears every so often at night doing the same thing at each appearance (such as a woman in her night gown lighting a candle and walking upstairs). If the environment is greatly altered, the phantasm usually stops appearing. They are often believed to be an imprint on reality caused by a greatly emotional experience. As a ghost, specters are either visible, allow or mysteriously create an image to be seen.

In Dungeons and Dragons, Specters (spectres) are intelligent evil spirits of the dead that haunt isolated, deserted homes. They can be seen and appear as they were before they died, but they are semitransparent. These specters can touch people to drain their health and experience. Anyone who is killed by a specter becomes a specter and is controlled by whoever killed them. Most specters live alone, but some have several followers whom they control.
