Dragon Warrior Easter Eggs
The Alternative had some interesting experiences with Dragon Warrior games. Whether they were glitches or intentional secrets is unknown:
  • A travelling merchant was encountered selling chainmail in Dragon Warrior for the NES during a battle against a Wolflord near the bridge to Hauksness. The Alternative chose yes to purchase it and the game froze on him.
  • In Dragon Warrior 2 for the NES The Alternative walked into the western part of the ocean during the beginning of the game and was teleported to Moonbrook.
  • The Alternative converted a character to a Sage without the Book of Satori but the character only had 1 hit point.
For more information you may go to the message board. If you can confirm one of these secrets please email me at mageslime@yahoo.com.

Dragon Warrior VII - Fall 2001
Enix of America has announced that Dragon Warrior 7 will be released in Fall 2001. A nice Dragon Warrior 7 Website and Message Board were also created.

When you go to Enix.com you see a flash movie of the Enix logo followed by another movie showing some material for Dragon Quest 7. Enix repeatedly added a little more to the second movie showing material for Dragon Quest 7 -- now including the logo for Dragon Warrior VII.

Each of the movie updates has its own file name. All of the file names contain a secret message: if you can figure out what this is for then you are truly worthy of the title Dragon Warrior.

What's with the scuzzy popup?
Is a banner on every page not enough? I don't know, this never happened before. I'll see what I can do to get rid of them. I already selected to use banners from Hypermart instead of their popups, so this is annoying.

Yuji Horii Interview: By Nintendo Power
Wolfnfox informed me that a recent issue of Nintendo Power has a Yuji Horii Interview and typed it out to show everyone:

Help The Dragon Quest 3 (Super Famicom) Translation!
According to Zophar's Domain Illuminus needs help with their translation and told them them following:

...We are in desperate need of dedicated and efficient people who are willing to translate the script "DQ3R1616.EUC", the 16x16 font dialogue text. This file is around 380K unzipped and needs to be translated badly. We have taken care of about 95% of all the 8x8 text, which includes menus, 8x8 dialogue (mostly battle), spells, items, etc. We need people to join forces with us and bring this wonderful game to the United States rather quickly. The more people we get going on this, the faster we'll get the job done. Once you've applied, we will decide who translates what so the team doesn't translate already translated text (i.e. who will do the first quarter, who will do the second quarter, etc.). PLEASE HELP US!!! We will do ANYTHING to get this game translated but we will not settle for a halfway job either. We expect quality work (someone who is either fluent in Japanese or is a Native of Japan). If you're simply looking to play games, go elsewhere...

How Is Damage Determined?
The game has a complicated statistical engine that determines damage. Here is a formula I came up with that seems to describe the damage I recorded dealing when playing Dragon Warrior for the NES (considering attack power and defense):

(attack power - [defense/2])/2 = maximum damage (at least 2)

(attack power - [defense/2])/4 = minimum damage (at least 1)

Note:
Attack power = attack power of the attacker (weapon + Strength).
Defense = defense of the character who is hit (armor + agility [or 1/2 agility depedning on the game])

Both formulas (for max & min damage) would be needed to figure out damage since damage is random (a number between max & min). The most common damage would be the average/medium damage:

*Possible problems*: I'm still not sure how this would work out against things with extremelly high defense, like metal slimes. Even against an enemy with more than twice your defense it might be possible to deal extra damage *if* you have enough attack power. This could probably be fixed if the "at least 2 damage" for maximum damage was changed, based more on attack power (+1/100 attack power):

max/possible damage without a criticle hit
1-99 attack power = 2
100-199 attack power = 3
200-299 attack power = 4
300-399 attack power = 5...

Here are the basic rules of damage:
  • Maximum damage is the most you can deal without a critical hit.
  • A critical hit is the amount of damage dealt if the enemy had no defense.
  • High attack power versus high defense generally deals more damage than low attack power versus low defense.
  • The less defense a monster has, the higher the damage range is.
  • The damage range causes how much you might deal less than maximum damage
  • The damage range is biggest when against enemies with lower defense, and extremely low against enemies with high defense. This actually makes it a little harder to fight weaker monsters than could be expected.
  • Within the damage range average damage is extremely likely, and possibilities of lucky or unlucky amounts of damage are rare.
  • In Dragon Quest 2-7 monsters have an ability to regenerate a certain amount of damage. It does not regenerate more than dealt, but if you don't deal enough damage the monster might not be damaged. This means attacking one monster with multiple characters is a good idea, and healing a character might keep you from hurting a boss.

Dragon Warrior Online - Black Moon Saga
Here are more details about Black Moon Saga, an online multiplayered game based on Dragon Warrior being made by MotrinIB. (The details were explained by MotrinIB):
  • Story: The story will be much like a normal Dragon Warrior game.

It will be completely pre-scripted, so a player can complete the entire game on their own (if they spend a LOT more time on it). However, I do intend to implement some ideas that will prevent players from advancing too far into the game on their own without the help of other players now and then.

Since new quests, maps, and events can easily be added into the game, I would also like to allow players to alter the story line, add/remove areas, quests, and events through special GM run player events. This way the game may not be completely the same each time through.

  • Bosses: There will be bosses... however - once defeated by a player, it will not respawn for that player again unless the player is in a party with another player who has not been flagged for defeating that boss. Only the players who have not defeated the boss will receive the items, though. This will prevent players from fighting the same boss (who should now be dead according to thier story line) as well as getting the item over and over. However, depending on the nature of the item, the players may or may not be able to give the item to another player.

Later in the game, there will be items that can only be kept in a users inventory for a certain amount of time before vanishing back to it's original point (which is explained in the game). This makes certain items needed for game advancement more valuable and sought after, as well as giving a sense of urgency to players who have just spent a lot of time trying to obtain it - and don't want to do it all over again.

  • Evil Heroes: You will not be able to be a monster character... the first time through the game. A remorte system will present players who have just completed the game with options for new character creation, monsters will be amoung them.

Players might be presented with the option of joining forces with evil - thus introducing the pk system, however this would require a completly seperate game for those evil players from that point on, so it will not be a part of the initial game.

  • Evil Player Control: The pk system in Black Moon Saga might only allow players to party with or attack players within a certian level range.

  • Death Punishment: Heroes who die will return to the last healer that recorded their journey (or position) with half gold and half Exp. Players may deposit most of their gold into banks, so gold may not be much of a loss to some players... but Experience will be, especially at higher levels. This has already been coded.

Fan-Made Web-Based Dragon Warrior - Black Moon Saga Dragon Warrior: Black Moon Saga is a fan-based multi-player RPG currently in development by MotrinIB. This is a brand-new fan project, so don't confuse it with Dragon Warrior Online (the first fan-made Dragon Warrior game that has dissapeared) or Enix's project of a web-based Dragon Quest game.

You will be able to talk to people, like in a chat room when playing this web-based game. The programmer is currently working on the talk and look options, and the battle engine. Eventually you also will be able to join a party of other players. Here is what is mentioned to be completed:
  • Players can choose class, sex, and clothing/armor color for their characters.
  • The only class is Soldier.
  • The item and status menus are now fully functional.

Bestiary of Modern Fantasy Review by Woodus
Woodus, webmaster of the Dragon's Den, has read my e-book and here is what he had to say:

James Gray has written his own E-book about many of the common monsters in today's fantasy realms and explained the origins of them and their uses in history, both in religion and game lore like Dungeons and Dragons and Dragon Quest.

It is a very interesting read and I would recommend it if you are at all interested in monster mythology I would take a look at it.

He covers a wide selection of modern monsters, like slimes, werewolves, dragons, ghosts, magicians and many more.

James has an introduction at http://dragon-warrior.com/mythology.html and the E-book can be purchased at Firstprint.com for only $3.

Dragon Warrior Remake: RPG Maker 2000
Phillip Knowlton's Dragon Warrior Remake for RPG Maker 2000 using sprites from the Super Famicom Dragon Quest games has been updated. Here are the updates he told me about:
  • all character sprites are changed to Dragon Quest 6 sprites except for the king and princess.
  • Added sounds for doors, chests, stairs, NPC talking, and battles.
  • Modified the Silver harp. When played on the main map it will cause a random battle with one of three monsters based on the hero level. Ex if hero at level 9 it will cause a random battle with either a wolf, warlock or metal scorpion. If hero at level 10 it will cause a random battle with either a Wraith.... When you die from a battle with the silver harp you will end up at the king's room with half gold.
  • I put in a code to count steps. When you cast radiate, your radius will decrease after a certain amount of steps like in DW.
  • Fixed the problem with the magic key in the king's room.
  • You can now choose from a list of names at the start of the game. Do you want your first name in the list? I'm going ask people on my site to email me there name if they want it in the list of names to choose from. N.B. In the english version of RPG Maker enter hero's name doesn't work that's why I put in the choice of names.
  • You are asked to confirm using a Magic Key so you don't use one by accident.

Dragon Warrior Legend Demo (Updated 3:00)
Going crazy waiting for Dragon Warrior 7 to be released? RPGKing finished a fully playable demo to Dragon Warrior Legend, a completely original Dragon Warrior game in development.

Unlike about any other true finished Dragon Warrior clones and fan-made demos, this game and demo has a party system and spells! Other great features include shops, battles, a cave, and a challenging boss. The demo is not the entire game, it's a single quest to let people have something to do while waiting.

I have played the Dragon Warrior Legend demo. There are several small glitches and bugs, but it is fully playable and a great game overall.

Enix at Sakura Con 2001
I got an email from Isaac Alexander about a convention that Enix will go to. I will be in school working on a couple huge papers at that time, but if you can make it be sure to ask Enix fun questions like how Ortega got to Zoma's Castle without the rainbow bridge and why Alefgard seems caged in Dragon Warrior 3.

Hello. My name is Isaac Alexander, and I'm the convention Chairman for Sakura Con 2001, The Pacific Northwest Anime, Manga, and Gaming Convention taking place April 27-29 in Everett Washington(Just 20 minutes north of Seattle). http://www.sakuracon.org

I'm sending out a reminder to our Dragon Quest/Warrior Fans that Enix USA will be at our convention hosting an hour panel on their future plans. This is your chance to hear answers to your questions straight from the source. A schedule of events will hopefully be posted before the convention on the website so you can plan accordingly. We're also hoping that there will be lots of people dressed up in Dragon Quest costumes.

Thank you for your time. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

Sincerely

Isaac Alexander

Secret Message at Enix.com
When you go to Enix.com you see a flash movie of the Enix logo followed by another movie showing some material for Dragon Quest 7. Enix has been repeadedly adding a little more to the movie showing material for Dragon Quest 7. This makes it seem obvious that Dragon Quest 7 will be released to the United States -- possibly with the title "Dragon Warrior 7."

In the second movie the Dragon Quest 7 world map (completely empty other than Estard island) is shown in the distance followed by a close-up view. Each of the movie file names are different. The last three seem to have a secret message: ifyou.swf, can.swf, and figure.swf. So far it seems like the secret message is directly referring to the fact that it has a secret message to tell us.

Jigsaw was the first person who started to figure out that it had a secret message.

It is certain the map shown is from Dragon Quest 7 as it is on the Enix of Japan website labled "Dragon Quest VII World Map by Shintaro Majima."

Chrono Warrior: Fan-Made RPG Update
Chrono Warrior is a Chrono Trigger and Dragon Quest 6 crossover being made with RPGmaker 2000. It is almost entirely based on Chrono Trigger with the exception of having a Dragon Quest battle and monster catching system. The Dragon Quest 6 characters will be remade to have a Chrono Trigger design style. Dragon Quest monster graphics will mostly be from Toriyama scans found on the net, but Chrono Trigger monster graphics will probably be redrawn. All the maps of Dragon Quest 6 and Chrono Trigger will be remade.

Several screen shots were added to the Chrono Warrior Webpage.
